Mr. Obama has begun the drive with little publicity, eschewing the modern campaign technique of unveiling new spots for the news media, because the strategy contradicts Mr. Obama's promise to transcend traditional politics. He is running the negative smear commercials on local stations in key states in an attempt to boost his lagging poll numbers.
